We have been in many different Subaru models lately but may have found the best value and most luxurious model in the Subaru lineup.
We have really loved the Outback wagons we have been in over the last couple of years, but this 2023 Legacy sedan shares most of its DNA with the Outback, sans that long roofline and rear hatch. Oh, and it also cuts the price of the wagon by $5,000 as well. That got us thinking as we took a tour of this one, is it worth the $5,000 to get the wagon with its increased cargo capacity, or is the Legacy a better buy? That can really only be answered by you and your specific use case, but for normal commuting, and family duty, this Legacy does check a lot of boxes. This XT Touring model is the top trim, and sadly no Wilderness model is available. If we could get this in a Wilderness…. stand back folks!
For 2023 the entire Legacy lineup gets new facias to match the (non-Wilderness) Outback and Ascent models. The grille is larger and the headlights have been revamped over outgoing models and it keeps the family resemblance alive across their biggest models.
Inside we are wrapped in brown Nappa leather. Driver seat controls are tied to a 2-person memory function, and both front seats are heated and ventilated. The use of brown and black in this model is done nicely unless you despise brown, and really helps break up the look of the interior. Otherwise, it is standard Subaru fare, familiar to anyone who has been in a modern “Subie” lately. Eyesight is here and updated for 2023. We have an 11.6-inch Starlink infotainment screen that handles the AC controls as well.
The elephant in the room is the trunk versus the rear hatch of the Outback. Cargo space is cut in half over the wagon, but the sedan’s 15. Cubic feet of space is larger than many other sedans we have tested lately and is dead even with the segment leader Toyota Camry we tested last year. If you don’t find yourself hauling larger and bulky items around ofter, or don’t have a dog roaming around in the rear cargo area, this Legacy may be the bargain option for your next luxurious full-size Subaru.
