Better than a Benz? 2022 Genesis G80 AWD 3 5T Sport Prestige

Writer's picture: Cory FourniquetCory Fourniquet

Genesis is here to play, and those intentions are made abundantly clear with this 2022 G80 sedan.

Starting life as the genesis of the entire brand as the upscale Hyundai Genesis, the G80 is now in its third generation which began as a 2021 model. The newest G80 is set to disrupt the luxury sport sedan segment with its bold, expressive styling, powerful engines, and luxurious appointments all at a significant saving versus its German rivals. This South Korean sedan has come a long way from its humble beginnings.

Starting outside, the G80 wears the brand's new corporate styling with the brand’s crested logo which inspires the large grille and quad headlights, marking the distinctive face of every Genesis. Also prominent are the two lines that run from the headlights to the side fenders, and around to the taillights. Sculpted body lines flow from the nose to the tail and accentuate the wide hips and the G80's athletic and elegant characteristics.

Moving inside, the driver is greeted by Genesis' new digital 3D cluster measuring 12.3-inches behind the steering wheel, a large 12-inch head-up display, and a 14.5-inch color infotainment screen that is touch-sensitive and can also be controlled by a touchpad/scroll-wheel on the center console. Nappa leather is wrapped around the seats and leatherette over the dash. The roof and pillars are wrapped in suede microfiber giving a truly premium design to a very quiet cabin thanks to the use of acoustic glass.

Power comes from a 3.5L turbocharged V6 that makes 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, which is routed through an 8-speed automatic to all four wheels which are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Speaking of all four wheels, this one is also equipped with 4-wheel steering, which helps to hide the 118.5-inch wheelbase of this sedan by making it extremely maneuverable in tight situations (and very fun on a grand tour).

How did we like it, and how does it compare to some Mercedes-Benz products we have tested? You will have to watch to find out.
