Grand Tour Ready: 2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet

Writer's picture: Cory FourniquetCory Fourniquet

Earlier this year we tested the smaller A3 sport sedan from Audi and fell in love with its overall character. From its playful size and powertrain, to its German attention to detail. This week we are in a larger and more powerful vehicle from the luxury automaker in this 2022 Audi S5 Cabriolet. And while the weather may have shifted out of convertible weather here in East Texas as we prepare for Christmas, this 2-door, 4-seat convertible proves it is all-weather ready.

Starting with the powertrain, not only does this S5 have Audi’s turbocharged 3.0L V6, but it is mated to an excellent 8-speed Tiptronic® automatic transmission that does quick work of changing gears, and to make it truly all-weather ready the S5 is equipped with Audi’s quattro® all-wheel drive. In the summer that means quick acceleration runs with little drama, in the winter that means confident traction when the situation calls for it.

Power from the 3.0L turbocharged V6 is ample with 349 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. When conditions are right, that means 0-60 mph acceleration runs of an Audi-claimed 4.7 seconds. The soundtrack to those blasts to speed is entertaining as well, as that V6 and its sport-tuned exhaust make for a satisfying experience not only in the seat-of-the-pants feeling of the acceleration, but also to all the onlookers who can see and hear this thing zip away.

Audi has put in several different drive modes that also aid in the S5’s grand touring intentions. From Sport to Comfort, you should be able to find a drive mode that fits you and your driving style. Each one adjusts transmission shift points, suspension dampening, and steering inputs for a tailored drive no matter you mood.

Lastly, as a convertible delivered for testing in the early fall, this did an amazing job at isolating us from the elements with the top up, and in 15 seconds opens the cabin to the world around you. Thanks to the insulation and lining inside, we never felt penalized for having a soft-top when the weather was cold or raining, but took full advantage of the convertible when the sun decided to grace us with its warmth.

All around, this is a solid entry into the grand tour segment, and would make both an excellent commuter, or fun weekend driving machine. Whatever your need, the S5 is worth a look.
