2026 Honda Pilot Elite: The Road Trip SUV I Didn’t Want to Give Back

When my mom, sister, teenage niece, Tucker, and I loaded up the 2026 Honda Pilot Elite for an 8-hour road trip to Mississippi, I expected it to be comfortable. I did not expect to love it as much as I did, or to have my sister bugging me with questions because now she wants one.

Road trips have a funny way of exposing every weakness in a vehicle. A lack of storage becomes obvious within the first hour. Poor seat comfort starts showing up before lunch. Kids get restless. Not enough power outlets. Someone can’t find a place to put their drink.

But the Pilot handled all of it with ease.

Why The Pilot Was Perfect For Our Mississippi Road Trip

The biggest thing I noticed during our trip was how relaxed everyone seemed.

That might sound like a strange compliment for an SUV, but if you’ve ever traveled eight hours with multiple generations of family members, including a teenager, you know exactly what I mean.

Nobody felt squeezed into their seat, and there was enough personal space that everyone could relax and enjoy the drive. By the time we reached Mississippi, we weren’t climbing out of the Pilot feeling stiff or exhausted, which says a lot about how well this SUV handles long distance travel.

My mom was comfortable, my sister and niece had plenty of room to spread out, and Tucker enjoyed having his own space in the third row. The cabin stayed impressively quiet at highway speeds, making conversations easy and creating a much calmer atmosphere than you often find in large family vehicles.

Honda also deserves credit for the steering updates for 2026. The Pilot feels confident and composed on the highway, which makes driving such a long way much less tiring.

Room For People, Luggage, And Everything In Between

Packing for five people can turn into a game of automotive Tetris.

Suitcases. Backpacks. Snacks. Electronics. Pillows. Random things that somehow become necessities the moment you leave home. The Pilot was more than capable of handling all of it. Thanks to the up to 22 cubic feet behind the third row, Tucker’s domain, and the hidden underfloor compartment. That hidden rear storage is covered by a reversible panel that is either carpet-covered so that items placed in the rear don’t rattle, or hard plastic for when you need to throw something messy in the back of your SUV.

We even plugged a small refrigerator into the rear outlet and still had plenty of room for luggage.

Storage throughout the cabin was just as impressive. The center console is massive, and the tiered door pockets are actually useful. There are cubbies throughout the interior for charging cables, sunglasses, toys, and all the little things that tend to accumulate during a road trip.

And there are cup holders everywhere. Parents know how important that is.

The Features My Family Appreciated Most

One of my favorite features was the ceiling-mounted air vents.

Second row and third row passengers receive airflow from above, which helps keep everyone comfortable even during hot summer travel. Ceiling-mounted air vents are also great for getting air to little ones who are still in rearward-facing car seats.  It’s one of those small details that makes a huge difference once you’re spending several hours in the car.

The seats were also fairly comfortable. After eight hours on the road, one way, I didn’t feel like I needed to visit the chiropractor.

The Elite trim adds premium materials throughout the cabin, and everything feels thoughtfully designed. The larger touchscreen is easy to use, wireless Apple CarPlay worked flawlessly, and the upgraded Bose audio system delivered excellent sound quality throughout the cabin.

One feature Tucker especially enjoyed was being able to listen to music from the rear speakers while others rested. It helped keep him entertained without disturbing everyone else.

It was also great to have the head up display. Since I was driving through areas I’d never been before, having navigation directions projected directly in my line of sight made it much easier to stay focused on the road without constantly glancing at the center screen.

A V6 That Makes Highway Driving Easy

Under the hood is a 3.5L V6 producing 285 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque.

What matters more than the numbers is how effortless it feels. The Pilot never struggled with passengers, luggage, or running up to highway speeds.

Merging into traffic was smooth, and passing slower vehicles required very little planning. The 10-speed automatic transmission stayed out of the way and simply did its job.

Fuel economy was another pleasant surprise. We averaged over 20 MPG, but the EPA estimates are 19 MPG city, 25 MPG highway, and 21 MPG combined. Considering the size of the SUV and the amount of cargo we carried, those numbers are impressive.

For families who regularly take road trips, that efficiency can make a noticeable difference over time.

Is The Honda Pilot Elite Worth The Price?

The 2026 Honda Pilot starts at $42,195. Our Elite tester came in at $54,990.

That places it squarely among other popular three-row family SUVs, including the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Toyota Grand Highlander, and Mazda CX-90.

What I appreciate about the Pilot is how balanced it feels. The technology is useful without being overwhelming, and the interior feels upscale without trying too hard. The space is generous without making it feel like you’re driving a boat.

Everything works together in a way that feels practical for everyday families.

Final Thoughts – Now My Sister Wants One

The interior packaging had to be the biggest selling point to my sister (Photo by Kevin McCauley)

After spending a full road trip behind the wheel, it’s easy to understand why the Honda Pilot continues to be one of the most popular family SUVs on the road.

It delivers the space families need, the comfort everyone appreciates, and the reliability Honda has built its reputation on. What stood out most wasn’t a single feature; it was how easy the Pilot made everything.

The packing.

The driving.

The comfort.

The entertainment.

The entire experience felt effortless.

If you’re shopping for a three-row SUV that can handle school drop offs during the week and family road trips on the weekend, the 2026 Honda Pilot Elite deserves a place near the top of your list.

I know our weekend trip has my sister considering replacing her aging Nissan Pathfinder with a brand-new Honda Pilot.
