2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9: Hyundai’s Most Luxurious EV

The 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 surprised us in the best way, because Hyundai didn’t just build a bigger EV; it built one that feels genuinely special. After a full week with the Calligraphy Performance AWD model, we found a three-row electric SUV with serious speed, real family space, and enough comfort tech to make luxury SUVs sweat.
Highs
✅ Blistering 0–60 mph in 4.45 seconds—while getting a massage
✅ Massive interior space and usable third row
✅ Smart tech like remote Smart Park and fingerprint profiles
✅ Surprisingly quiet and smooth, even on Texas backroads
Lows
👎 Big footprint makes tight parking lots a chore
👎 No real leather at nearly $80K
👎 DC fast charging time slower than some rivals
👎 Rear visibility is limited by the tapered roofline
Hyundai just swung for the fences with the 2026 IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Performance AWD, its biggest, boldest EV yet. After a full week living with this six-passenger land yacht, I can confidently say this isn’t just Hyundai showing off. It’s Hyundai proving it can build a luxury EV that doesn’t just go toe-to-toe with Tesla, it body slams the Escalade in the process.
A Familiar Shape, Super-Sized

At first glance, the IONIQ 9 looks like a Kona that spent a semester bulking up. Hyundai’s pixelated lighting carries over beautifully from the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, and the Cyber Gray paint hides road grime like a pro. Walk around it and the size becomes even more apparent, especially parked next to an Escalade, where it nearly matched GM’s beast in length and height (minus the boxy roofline).
Under the Hood… Sort Of

Being an EV, there’s no engine just a convenient frunk to stash your cables and adapters. Underneath, though, it gets serious. A 110.3 kWh battery feeds dual motors, making 422 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque via Hyundai’s HTRAC AWD system. Selectable drive modes help you tailor the power to your liking, from eco-cruising to tire-scorching sprints.
Quick Enough to Make a Mustang Blush

Using RaceBox timing gear, we launched this 6-passenger beast from 0–60 in just 4.45 seconds. That’s quicker than some V8 sports cars, and it did it smoothly, without drama, thanks to the instant torque of EV motors and all-wheel drive. We even did back-to-back runs in different drive modes, normal mode still clocked in under 4.7 seconds.
EV Comfort, Dialed to 11

From heated and ventilated second-row captain’s chairs to zero-gravity “relaxation mode” in four out of six seats, the IONIQ 9 feels like a high-end lounge on wheels. You even get massage functionality for the driver’s seat and fingerprint profile recognition. There’s wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, tri-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and a suede headliner to boot.
Practical Luxury? Yes, Actually

Thanks to smart storage, power-folding second and third rows, and clever pass-throughs, the IONIQ 9 isn’t just a looker, it’s insanely practical. Behind the third row, there’s space for actual luggage (rare in this class), and with everything folded flat, you’re looking at 86.9 cubic feet of cargo room.
The Drive: Smooth, Serene, Supremely Silent

Around town, it drives like a luxury sedan. On the highway, it cruises like a Range Rover. The air suspension soaks up bumps, active noise cancellation keeps the cabin whisper-quiet, and the steering, while not sporty, is precise enough to feel confident. It’s not a canyon carver, but it’s not trying to be.
Charging, Range, and Real-World Use

Hyundai claims 311 miles of range. Over our week, we averaged 2.6 mi/kWh, even with heavy A/C use in East Texas heat. It charged from 40% to full in 7 hours at home, while DC fast charging (up to 237 kW) can do 10–80% in just 24 minutes, though we’ve seen competitors edge that out.
2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 Verdict

This is the most luxurious Hyundai yet. It may not wear a Genesis badge, but it deserves to be in the same conversation. If you want family-ready space, sports-car acceleration, and an EV you’ll actually enjoy driving every day, the IONIQ 9 is worth every penny of its $77K price tag.
Hyundai isn’t just playing in the EV game; they’re rewriting the rules on what mainstream luxury can look like. For gearheads with growing families or anyone craving a high-tech hauler that still hauls, the IONIQ 9 delivers big.
