An Empire State Wedding Proves the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Is an Exceptional Family SUV
When Jeep handed us the keys to a 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer for a family wedding in New York, I had two thoughts at once. First, what a gorgeous way to travel. Second, I was about to pilot one of the biggest vehicles on sale through Manhattan for my very first time driving in NYC. Not nerve-wracking at all. As it turned out, though, the Empire State became the perfect proving ground. In total, we loaded up seven people, a week of luggage, and two weddings’ worth of outfits, and the big Jeep never made me regret the request. First-Time Manhattan Driving in One of the Biggest SUVs on Sale
Picking up a full-size Jeep in the middle of Manhattan sounds like a recipe for white knuckles. Fortunately, the Grand Wagoneer makes the job far easier than its footprint suggests. Above all, visibility is the headline here. Those tall, upright windows and oversized mirrors give you a commanding view of everything around you, which matters a great deal when you are threading between taxis, bold and impatient pedestrians, and delivery trucks. On top of that, the massive head-up display kept my eyes forward, at least whenever I remembered to lift my polarized sunglasses.
Still, the trip was not flawless. For example, our model carried only the federally mandated backup camera, and its resolution looked surprisingly rough on that big Uconnect touchscreen. In addition, I also missed the optional camera-based rearview mirror found on the top trims, so my mirror mostly framed luggage and passengers rather than the road behind. Honestly, for a family loaded to the roofline, that one feature would have been worth every penny.
Seven Passengers, a Week of Luggage, and a Hurricane 6-cylinder That Never Blinked
With seven aboard and enough suitcases for a full week in the city, we had to be flirting with the Jeep’s payload limit. Even so, you would never know it from behind the wheel. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six makes 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque, and it never broke a sweat. In fact, elevation changes, quick passing maneuvers, and fast merges north of the city did nothing to upset the powertrain. Better yet, the 8-speed automatic spoke the same language as the engine. As a result, the two worked in lock step, delivering smooth, confident power exactly when I asked for it.
Fuel economy impressed me, too. Specifically, the EPA rates the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer at 17 MPG city, 23 MPG highway, and 19 MPG combined, with an estimated annual fuel cost of about $2,600. Meanwhile, on our loaded run through the Empire State, we landed right on those figures and never needed to stop for fuel. One note for family budgets, though: the Hurricane runs best on premium, so plan for that at the pump.
A Second and Third Row Built for Real Families
Families do not just need seats. Instead, they need seats that actually work. Here, the Grand Wagoneer delivered. For instance, the second-row captain’s chairs feature a clever tip-and-slide function that folds the seat up and out of the way, so climbing into the third row is genuinely easy. Once back there, my adult niece and her friend had plenty of room to ride alongside Tucker. Better still, the third row has its own skylight, complete with a manual shade and USB power, plus power recline and real legroom. Overall, that is a rare combination in a full-size SUV.
Meanwhile, the second row won over our other passengers for a different reason. Our model included the optional rear entertainment screens, yet my mother- and father-in-law never touched them. Instead, they spent the drive soaking in the scenery as we rolled north out of Manhattan, thanks to the Grand Wagoneer’s enormous windows. In the end, sometimes the best family feature is simply a great view.
Premium Style Without the Top-Shelf Price
Style is one of the main reasons I requested this 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer in the first place. Clearly, it looks and feels expensive, and it carries itself with real presence. That said, our Limited Altitude was nicely equipped rather than fully loaded, and you could tell. For example, there were no wood accents, and the cabin leaned on plenty of gloss black plastic. Honestly, I would have loved massage seats for a long travel day. Even so, I did not miss the front passenger touchscreen from the pricier configurations, because in my experience that screen is usually too washed out by glare to be useful.
Here is one honest note for big families. If this exact trip were the assignment, then the longer Grand Wagoneer L would have been the smarter pick. Specifically, it stretches the wheelbase to open up considerably more cargo room behind the third row, which puts it squarely against the Chevrolet Suburban and Cadillac Escalade ESV. Ultimately, for seven people and a mountain of luggage, those extra cubic feet matter.
The Grand Wagoneer Comes Home to Jeep
There is a good story behind the badge. First, Jeep revealed the modern Grand Wagoneer as a concept in 2020, then launched the production Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer for the 2022 model year as a stand-alone premium sub-brand positioned above the regular Jeep lineup. Notably, the marketing leaned hard into New York, too. For instance, the memorable “Eyes Wide Open” campaign, fronted by Yankees legend Derek Jeter, debuted during the 2022 World Series and was filmed on the streets of New York City and upstate New York. Given our own Empire State assignment, therefore, driving one felt fitting.
The bigger news is what happened next. Eventually, Jeep decided to fold Wagoneer back into the Jeep brand rather than keep it separate, a change it began rolling out in 2024. As a result, for 2026 the plain “Wagoneer” name is gone entirely, and every version wears the Grand Wagoneer name with Jeep badging. In other words, the icon has officially come home. For shoppers, then, that means the same premium experience with the reassurance of the Jeep name on the hood.
