2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Brings Back the Good Stuff

Holli and I have a soft spot for Jeep Trailhawk models.

We owned a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, the smaller one, for the better part of a decade. It had the rugged look, the red tow hooks, the Trail Rated badge, and that feeling that even if we were mostly using it for normal life, it was ready for more when we needed it.

That is the thing Jeep has always done well.

A good Jeep does not have to be used off-road every weekend to make sense. It just needs to feel like it could.

That is why the return of the 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is interesting. Jeep is bringing back the most capable off-road trim in the Grand Cherokee lineup, and it is doing it alongside the return of the Grand Cherokee Overland, which takes a more refined approach to off-road capability.

One is rugged, one is polished.

Both are aimed at buyers who want a midsize SUV that can handle daily life without giving up the Jeep stuff that makes the brand special.

Trailhawk is back where it belongs

The Trailhawk name has always meant something in the Jeep lineup.

It is the trim that tells you Jeep is not just adding black wheels and a badge. It is supposed to bring actual hardware, better clearance, real 4×4 capability and that Trail Rated confidence.

For 2027, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk returns with a serious list of equipment.

Jeep says the new Trailhawk includes:

  • Quadra-Trac II 4×4 system with two-speed transfer case
  • Selec-Terrain traction control system with Rock mode
  • Quadra-Lift air suspension with electronic semi-active damping
  • Rear electronic limited-slip differential
  • 30.5-inch Goodyear Territory All-Terrain tires
  • Integrated TrailCam off-road camera with dynamic tire path
  • Rear camera washer
  • Six high-strength steel skid plates

That is the kind of list Trailhawk buyers want to see.

This is not just an appearance package. This is the version meant for people who actually care what is underneath.

Trail Rated still means something

The Trail Rated badge has always been part of the appeal.

On our old Cherokee Trailhawk, it was one of those little details that made the SUV feel more special. We did not spend every weekend pushing it to the limit, but knowing it was engineered and tested for more than the school run or grocery store parking lot was part of the fun.

Jeep says Trail Rated vehicles are engineered and tested for demanding off-road conditions including:

  • Traction
  • Water fording
  • Maneuverability
  • Articulation
  • Ground clearance

For the 2027 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, those numbers are impressive.

Jeep claims:

  • 11.4 inches of maximum ground clearance
  • 36-degree approach angle
  • 24.4-degree breakover angle
  • 30.3-degree departure angle

Jeep also says those are best-in-class figures.

That is important because the Grand Cherokee is not a Wrangler. It is a larger, more comfortable, more family-friendly SUV that still has to feel like a Jeep.

Trailhawk is what helps make that balance believable.

The new Hurricane 4 Turbo brings power, but we need more seat time

Under the hood, the 2027 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk gets Jeep’s new 2.0-liter Hurricane 4 Turbo engine.

Output is listed at 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Shifting duties are handled by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Those are strong numbers for a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

Jeep says peak torque arrives at 3,000 rpm, which should help with response and low-speed control. The company also highlights the engine’s Turbulent Jet Ignition system and 162 horsepower-per-liter output.

That all sounds good on paper.

But this is also where I want to spend more time behind the wheel before getting too excited. I sampled the Hurricane 4 for about an hour in SoCal, but have yet to truly live with it to see how it handles the daily grind.

The Grand Cherokee is a substantial SUV, and Trailhawk buyers are going to expect smooth power delivery, confident crawling control and enough punch for daily driving, road trips and towing.

The numbers are promising.

Towing stays strong

One of the better parts of this announcement is that Jeep did not sacrifice towing capability to make the Trailhawk more off-road focused.

Jeep says the 2027 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk maintains a best-in-class maximum towing capacity of 6,200 pounds.

For a lot of buyers, especially those using an SUV as the do-everything vehicle, towing is not just a spec sheet brag. It is the camper. The small boat. The utility trailer. The side-by-side. The weekend gear.

Trailhawk buyers want off-road credibility, but they still need the Grand Cherokee to behave like a real SUV when it is time to load up and go.

The styling gets the right Trailhawk touches

The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk looks the part.

Jeep gives it the familiar Trailhawk cues without making it look cartoonish.

Exterior details include:

  • Trailhawk-specific front fascia for improved approach angle
  • Signature red tow hooks
  • Matte black glare-resistant hood decal
  • Red Trailhawk detailing
  • 18-inch Granite Crystal wheels
  • All-terrain tires
  • Rear Trailhawk badge
  • Rear red tow hook
  • Dark neutral metallic accents

This is exactly the kind of stuff I liked about our old Cherokee Trailhawk.

It looked more rugged than a normal small SUV without trying too hard. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk appears to follow that same idea, just in a larger and more premium package.

Overland returns as the more refined option

The other big news is the return of the Grand Cherokee Overland.

If Trailhawk is the more rugged choice, Overland is the more polished one.

Jeep says the Overland trim has been part of the Grand Cherokee story for 25 years, and for 2027 it returns as a premium off-road model that does not abandon capability.

The Overland includes:

  • Quadra-Trac II with a two-speed transfer case
  • Quadra-Lift air suspension
  • Hill-descent Control
  • Semi-Active Damping
  • 360-degree surround-view camera with washer
  • Off-Road Pages

So even though it is the more refined Grand Cherokee, it still gets legitimate off-road hardware.

That is what has always made Overland interesting. It is not the hardcore one, but it is not soft either.

Overland leans into comfort

The Grand Cherokee Overland also gets a more premium look and feel.

Jeep says it includes:

  • More aggressive front end
  • Bright tow hooks
  • Painted black lower bodywork
  • 21-inch machine-faced wheels
  • Mid-gloss Granite Crystal pockets
  • Body-color painted roof
  • Silver Silk exterior accents
  • Nappa leather upholstery
  • Overland embossing on the front seatbacks
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • Unique An-Teak Satin Chrome interior accents

That should make it the better fit for buyers who want Grand Cherokee comfort with enough Jeep capability to still feel authentic.

Think of it as the one for road trips, daily driving and rough-weather confidence, while the Trailhawk is the one that will tempt you to take the harder path.

Trailhawk or Overland?

These two trims serve different buyers.

Choose the Trailhawk if you want:

  • Maximum Grand Cherokee off-road capability
  • Trail Rated confidence
  • Best-in-class ground clearance
  • Best-in-class approach, breakover and departure angles
  • All-terrain tires
  • Skid plates
  • Red tow hooks
  • The more rugged look

Choose the Overland if you want:

  • A more premium appearance
  • Nappa leather
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • Air suspension
  • Real 4×4 hardware
  • A more refined daily driving feel
  • Capability without the full Trailhawk attitude

That is a smart split.

Not every Jeep buyer wants the same flavor of capability.

Why this return makes sense

The Grand Cherokee has always been at its best when it blends comfort and real Jeep credibility.

That is why the Trailhawk return feels important.

A Grand Cherokee should not just be another midsize SUV with a famous badge. It should feel more capable, more adventurous and more useful when the pavement ends.

At the same time, not every buyer wants a Wrangler. Some people want quiet. Space. Comfort. Towing. Technology. A nicer cabin. A vehicle that can do normal life during the week and still feel ready for something more on the weekend.

That is where Trailhawk and Overland fit.

They bring back two distinct Grand Cherokee personalities, one rugged, one refined.

What Jeep got right

Jeep is giving the Grand Cherokee lineup more identity.

Trailhawk brings back the off-road credibility. Overland brings back the premium adventure angle. Both get real 4×4 hardware, air suspension and useful technology.

The Trailhawk numbers are strong, especially the 11.4 inches of ground clearance and 6,200-pound towing claim.

The Overland sounds like the better everyday luxury play.

And both trims help separate Grand Cherokee from the crowd of normal midsize SUVs.

What gives me pause

The new Hurricane 4 Turbo engine is the big question.

The output looks good, but this is a Grand Cherokee. Buyers will expect smoothness, confidence and durability, not just horsepower-per-liter bragging rights.

I also want to know pricing.

Grand Cherokee prices can climb quickly, and Trailhawk and Overland trims will likely not be cheap. If Jeep can keep these positioned correctly, they could make a strong case. If pricing climbs too high, shoppers may start comparing them with larger, more premium SUVs.

We also need more real-world seat time before judging ride quality, engine response, and interior comfort.

Final thoughts: The Grand Cherokee feels more Jeep again

2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk (Photo by Jeep)

The return of the 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and Overland feels like a good move.

Trailhawk brings back the rugged, Trail Rated version for buyers who want the most capable Grand Cherokee. Overland returns for buyers who want refinement without completely giving up Jeep capability.

And for those of us who have owned and enjoyed a Trailhawk before, this return makes sense.

Our old 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk was not perfect, but it had personality. It looked right. It felt ready. It made normal driving a little more fun because it carried the idea that you could take the longer, rougher route if you wanted to.

That is the feeling Jeep needs to protect.

If the 2027 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk can bring that same spirit to a larger, more comfortable SUV, it could be exactly what the lineup needed.

And if the Overland can deliver the premium side without forgetting the Jeep side, this refreshed Grand Cherokee lineup just got a lot more interesting.
