Scroll through any truck forum right now, and you will find someone claiming GM wants to charge you monthly for everything on your new truck, and 2027 Silverado subscriptions are the latest target. Automakers are leaning into subscriptions, and GM gets called out more than most. We even raised the connectivity question in our 2027 Chevrolet Bolt RS family review, where Holli and I missed having Apple CarPlay.

So I went to the source. The 2027 Silverado 1500 order guide spells out what comes standard, what comes with a free trial, and what you will pay for later. Here is what is myth and what is fact when it comes to 2027 Silverado subscriptions.

What Every 2027 Silverado Gets Standard

The good news first: a lot of connected tech comes on every 2027 Silverado, from the Work Truck to the High Country, with no subscription required to use it.

  • 16.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in. Every trim gets it, with navigation capability, connected apps, personalized driver profiles, and Natural Voice Recognition.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The order guide lists wireless phone projection as standard on all eight trim columns. That is a big difference from the Bolt, which does not offer CarPlay.
  • 12.2-inch digital driver display, Bluetooth, and 5G capability. All standard.
  • OnStar Basics for 8 years. This is the one most people miss. OnStar Basics is standard for eight years, and it includes built-in voice assistance, real-time navigation, access to audio streaming apps, remote commands through the Chevrolet mobile app, and Automatic Crash Response.

In other words, the core stuff you use every day, like navigation, music, phone mirroring, and locking the truck from your phone, is not behind a paywall for the first eight years.

Where the Subscriptions Actually Start

The subscriptions are real, but they sit on top of the standard features, not in place of them. Here is where your wallet comes in.

OnStar One. This is GM’s all-in-one plan, and it adds 24/7 emergency advisors, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, the in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot, and expanded apps like an internet browser, games, and video streaming. The order guide shows a 3 Years OnStar One package as an available retail option on most trims. It comes included on the ZR2 and High Country, and with the Super Cruise Package. After that, OnStar lists OnStar One starting at $34.99 a month.

Wi-Fi hotspot. Every Silverado is Wi-Fi hotspot capable, but the order guide notes that terms and limitations apply. In practice, the hotspot needs a paid data plan. OnStar’s Connect Plus plan, which covers the hotspot and passenger entertainment, starts at $19.99 a month or $199 a year.

SiriusXM. Most trims include a SiriusXM with 360L trial subscription, and the Work Truck gets it with the Power Package. A 3 Years SiriusXM prepaid plan is also available. After the trial, satellite radio is a subscription, just like it has been for years.

None of this is new. What is new is how much of the truck’s personality now runs through software, which is why buyers are paying closer attention.

Super Cruise Is the Biggest Subscription on the Truck

If there is one feature that fuels the subscription chatter, it is Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver assistance system. On the 2027 Silverado, it is standard on the ZR2 and High Country and available on the Silverado and Trail Boss through the Super Cruise Package, which requires a Crew Cab and the Assisted Driving Package. It is not offered on the Work Truck, Custom, or Custom Trail Boss.

Here is the key detail from the order guide: Super Cruise includes three years of OnStar One with the Super Cruise upgrade. After that initial three-year period, you have to buy an OnStar Super Cruise plan to keep using it.

There is a way to push that date out. The order guide lists an OnStar One Super Cruise Extension to 8 Years option on every trim that can get Super Cruise. Buy it up front, and you are covered for eight years before a plan is required.

So yes, Super Cruise is a subscription. But if your truck has it, you get three years to decide whether you use it, and you can prepay for eight years when you order. Pricing for the extension and the ongoing Super Cruise plan can vary, so ask your dealer to quote both before you sign.

Myth vs. Fact: The 2027 Silverado Scorecard

Here is how the most common claims stack up against the order guide.

The claimMyth or factWhat the order guide says
“You have to pay monthly just to use navigation.”MythGoogle built-in navigation capability is standard, and OnStar Basics, with real-time navigation, is standard for eight years.
“GM is killing Apple CarPlay on the Silverado.”MythWireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2027 Silverado trim.
“The phone app and remote commands cost extra.”MythRemote commands through the mobile app are part of OnStar Basics for eight years.
“Automatic Crash Response is a paid add-on.”MythAutomatic Crash Response is included in OnStar Basics.
“The Wi-Fi hotspot is free.”MythThe truck is hotspot capable, but the hotspot needs a paid OnStar data plan.
“Super Cruise needs a subscription.”FactThree years are included, then an OnStar Super Cruise plan is required, unless you buy the 8-year extension.
“SiriusXM is free forever.”MythIt starts with a trial subscription, then it is a paid plan.

The Verdict

GM is leaning into subscriptions, but the 2027 Silverado is not the pay-for-everything truck the internet makes it out to be. The features you use every day, like navigation, CarPlay, streaming audio, the phone app, and crash response, are covered for the first eight years. Instead, 2027 Silverado subscriptions start with the extras: Wi-Fi, premium OnStar services, satellite radio, and Super Cruise.

My advice: if you want Super Cruise, price out the 8-year extension when you order. Otherwise, you can skip the extras and still have a well-connected truck for years.
