Get One Now, Or Wait? 2022 Chevrolet Trax and Affordable Crossover About to be Reborn

Why are we reviewing a 2022 model year vehicle here in 2023, especially one that won’t even be in production for the 2023 model year? Simple. While yes this Chevrolet Trax was discontinued in 2022, it will be completely reborn as a 2024 model with some pretty significant changes… changes that might have you considering tracking down a 2022 model… let me explain.
NEED TO KNOW
- Writer explicitly calls this ‘reviewing a 2022 model year vehicle’ and drove it.
- 2024 Trax is larger but FWD-only; 2022 is AWD but being discontinued.
- Choice comes down to whether traction or interior space matters more to the buyer.
- 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder paired with a 6-speed automatic.
- Fuel economy rated at 23 city / 30 highway / 26 combined mpg.
We have already seen and explored the pre-production version of the 2024 Chevy Trax at the LA Auto show last November. We really liked that vehicle as it was wider, longer, and has a lower roofline than this 2022 model. That translates to much more room on the inside, but it comes at a cost.
The 2024 model will only be offered as a front-wheel drive model as a matter of cost-savings. The top trims of the new one are just shy of $25,000 whereas this 2022 stickers for $25,465. However, this 2022 is an all-wheel drive model with a 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 155 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque.
The new model will have a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder making 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. Meaning we lost some power and traction but gained a larger vehicle in the process.
Whether or not that additional traction and power are important to you could be the difference between hunting down a 2022 model, or waiting to snag one of the larger 2024 models. There is a lot to like at a low entry price point for each model year, you just need to decide what fits your needs more. (Also consider, many dealers might just make you a deal on a prior year vehicle still sitting on the lot.)

CONS
- Discontinued after 2022 with no 2023 model year produced
