American Honda just had its best September since 2020. Combined Honda and Acura sales climbed 15.9% to 121,796 vehicles in September, and the company followed that with its best third quarter since 2019. Quarterly sales rose 9.3% to 392,341 vehicles.

So what drove the jump? Honda points to affordability, record hybrid sales, and a balanced lineup of cars and SUVs. In fact, Honda brand hybrid sales topped 106,000 units in the third quarter, the best third quarter ever for its hybrids.

Once again, the CR-V carried the load. Honda sold 34,788 CR-Vs in September, up 21.9% and a record for the compact SUV. Third-quarter CR-V sales also set a record at 110,730, up 16.6%. It is no surprise, since the CR-V was already one of the best-selling vehicles in America this year.

Above all, hybrids are a big part of that story. Honda sold a record 18,521 CR-V Hybrid models in September and a record 59,668 in the quarter, which means more than half of all CR-V buyers chose the hybrid. As a result, inventory is tight, with only about 17 days of supply.

Hybrids Push Honda to Its Best Third Quarter Since 2019

Honda’s cars had a strong month, too. For example, Accord sales rose 27.7% in September to 16,507, and Accord sales are up 32.7% for the year. Hybrids accounted for 44% of Accord sales in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, the Civic added 17,724 sales in September, up 8.4%, with the hybrid making up 35% of the mix. Overall, Honda brand car sales climbed 20.9% in the quarter, while light truck sales rose 4.3%.

“Honda and Acura were able to buck industry trends and increase both sales and market share through a winning formula focused on affordability, record sales of hybrid models and a commitment to offer our customers a balanced lineup of passenger cars and light trucks,” said Lance Woelfer, vice president of auto sales at American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

Passport TrailSport and HR-V Keep Honda SUVs Moving

Likewise, the Passport had its best quarter ever, with third-quarter sales up 17.9%. September sales rose 19.5%, and Passport sales are up 14.1% for the year. Even more telling, the rugged Passport TrailSport trims account for more than 80% of Passport sales.

Elsewhere in the SUV lineup, the HR-V sold 12,445 units in September, up 14.5%, and set a third-quarter sales record. The three-row Pilot added 9,481 sales, up 8.8%.

Acura Has Its Best September Since 2023

To start, Acura sold 10,135 vehicles in September, up 4.4% and its best September since 2023. Acura SUV sales rose 15.5%, which more than offset a 31.8% drop in car sales. For the quarter, Acura sales climbed 9.9% to 33,953.

Meanwhile, the MDX was the standout, with sales up 63.4% in September and 63.5% in the quarter. In addition, the MDX has topped 4,000 sales for seven straight months. The entry-level ADX also kept growing, with September sales up 20.9% to 2,701. That gives the ADX about 30% of retail sales in its segment, which helps explain why Honda is reportedly open to hybrid versions of the ADX and HR-V.

Similarly, the Integra continues to sell well despite low inventory. Integra sales are up 37.3% for the year to more than 20,000 units, and the sporty sedan holds about 40% of retail sales in its segment.

What Comes Next for Honda

Honda brand sales passed 1 million for the year one month earlier than in 2025, and Acura topped 100,000 a month sooner, too. However, strong demand comes with a catch. In particular, key models are running on roughly 16 to 17 days of supply, so shoppers may find fewer choices on dealer lots.

Honda also has fresh product on the way, including the updated 2027 Civic Type R. For a broader look at how the industry finished the quarter, see our coverage of Hyundai’s record September and GM’s third-quarter sales.
