Mazda Drops the CX-70 as a New Two-Row 2027 Mazda CX-90 Takes Its Place

Mazda is simplifying its midsize SUV lineup, following through on the big changes it promised for its large SUVs, and that means saying goodbye to the Mazda CX-70 in the U.S. For 2027, a new two-row version of the Mazda CX-90 replaces the CX-70, folding both SUVs into a single nameplate. The timing hits close to home, because our family just spent a week with the 2026 Mazda CX-70 3.3 Turbo S Premium.
Along with the two-row option, the 2027 CX-90 picks up suspension updates for a smoother ride, a quieter plug-in hybrid, four new colors, and more standard technology on several trims. Meanwhile, pricing starts at $39,700, plus a $1,645 destination charge.
The Mazda CX-70 Is Gone, but Two Rows Live On

After all, the CX-70 was essentially a two-row, sportier take on the CX-90. For example, in our testing, it was very hard to tell the two apart from the side, and the third-row leftovers in the cargo area gave away just how much they shared. As a result, combining them makes a lot of sense.
Indeed, according to Mazda, bringing the CX-90 and CX-70 together creates a simpler, more flexible lineup built around how people actually shop. In other words, instead of choosing a nameplate, buyers can now choose the CX-90 that fits their family, with two rows or three.
Which 2027 CX-90 Trims Get Two Rows

The new two-row configuration is offered on the CX-90 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport and the CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport. It also adds one-touch, auto-down second-row seats for easier cargo loading. Plus, two new colors, Melting Copper Metallic and Zircon Sand Metallic, are exclusive to two-row models.
Better yet, choosing two rows also saves a little money. The 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport starts at $46,880 with two rows versus $48,080 with three. Similarly, the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport is $53,540 with two rows versus $54,740 with three. In both cases, that is a $1,200 difference.
For comparison, the 2026 CX-70 3.3 Turbo S Premium we tested started at $53,240 and came in at $55,985 as tested.
A Smoother Ride and a Quieter PHEV

To start, every 2027 CX-90 gets updated rear suspension bushings and a revised rear suspension crossmember, both designed to improve ride comfort over rough pavement. That is good news, because a firm ride was one of our biggest complaints about the CX-70.
In addition, the CX-90 PHEV’s electric drive motor now has external insulation for quieter operation at low speeds.
New Colors and More Standard Tech for the 2027 CX-90

First, four new exterior colors join the lineup: Navy Blue Mica, Aero Gray Metallic, Melting Copper Metallic, and Zircon Sand Metallic. Meanwhile, standard equipment grows on several trims:
- 3.3 Turbo Preferred: standard roof rails
- 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport and PHEV Premium Sport: Alexa Built-In
- 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus: Mazda Online Navigation with over-the-air updates
- PHEV Premium Plus: Mazda Online Navigation and Alexa Built-In
Three Powertrains Carry Over

Under the hood, the 2027 CX-90 keeps the same three powertrains. The 3.3 Turbo uses a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, making 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. Meanwhile, the 3.3 Turbo S makes 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft on 91-octane fuel, or 319 horsepower on regular. Plus, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.
Finally, the CX-90 PHEV pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 17.8-kWh battery for 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Better still, it offers up to 27 miles of all-electric range. Every CX-90 uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive (AWD).
How the 2027 CX-90 Answers Our Mazda CX-70 Complaints

We just spent a week with the CX-70, so we compared what Mazda is changing for 2027 against our notes, including Holli’s mom’s take on the CX-70. As it turns out, some of our biggest gripes get addressed, while others carry over.
Ride quality: First, we called the CX-70’s ride firm, with more road noise than a Lexus RX. For 2027, every CX-90 gets updated rear suspension bushings and a revised rear crossmember designed for a smoother ride over rough pavement. Holli felt it too. After rolling over the historic brick streets of downtown Tyler, she summed up the CX-70’s ride as “firm, yes, punishing, no” and put it on her list of cons. For both of us, this is the change we most wanted to see.
Part sharing: Our biggest knock on the CX-70 was how obviously it shared parts with the CX-90, from the profile to the third-row armrests left in the cargo area. As a result, Mazda is now making that official by selling both as one CX-90 lineup.
Cargo flexibility: Holli loved how much room the CX-70 had behind the second row for strollers, groceries, and sports gear. Now, the two-row CX-90’s new one-touch, auto-down second-row seats should make folding everything flat for bigger hauls quicker, especially with a kid in one hand and bags in the other.
What Carries Over
Power: Our best 0 to 60 run in the CX-70 Turbo S took 6.68 seconds, and we felt the powertrain had more to give. However, the 3.3 Turbo S carries over unchanged at 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, so, in other words, do not expect a quicker two-row CX-90.
Price: Meanwhile, the two-row CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport starts at $53,540, just $300 more than the $53,240 starting price of the CX-70 Turbo S Premium we tested. On top of that, destination rises from $1,530 to $1,645.
Cabin storage: Holli’s biggest gripe was the lack of places to stash the odds and ends of family life, from the shallow center console to the small door pockets. Mazda did not announce any interior storage changes for 2027, so expect the two-row CX-90 to share that weakness.
Car seat tethers: Likewise, the two-row CX-90 still rides on a three-row platform. As a result, Holli’s note about reaching across the long cargo area to hook a top tether likely still applies.

Our Take on the Mazda CX-70 Discontinuation

If you liked the CX-70, its two-row layout is not going away. It is just wearing a CX-90 badge now. Our week with the CX-70 showed a compelling SUV held back by heavy part sharing, so merging the two simply makes that sharing official. We hope the two-row CX-90 keeps some of the CX-70’s unique front-end styling, which was its biggest advantage over the CX-90. Holli was smitten with that “happy, confident” face from the moment she met the CX-70 at its media launch in Palm Springs, and she says it more than holds its own in the school pickup line. Still, a smoother ride and a lower price for two rows are steps in the right direction. Read our full 2026 Mazda CX-70 test to see what buyers will get in two-row form.
