Toyota’s Family Vehicle Lineup Keeps Winning With Hybrids and SUVs

Toyota doesn’t need to convince shoppers that electrification works.

It simply needs to keep offering vehicles families already trust with the option of outstanding fuel economy.

That strategy continues paying dividends.

Toyota Motor North America reported another strong month, with U.S. sales rising 10.1% in June, led by a strong push by the Toyota brand. Electrified vehicles accounted for nearly half of everything the company sold, up 35% thanks to 33 total electrified vehicles offered by both Toyota and Lexus. Rather than forcing buyers toward one technology, Toyota hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EV offerings continue attracting families across nearly every segment.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Toyota’s latest sales report is how mainstream hybrids have become.

Electrified vehicles represented roughly 48% of Toyota and Lexus sales during the second quarter, with more than 380,000 electrified vehicles sold.

That includes traditional Toyota hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery-electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

For families, it reinforces something we’ve noticed during recent test drives: many buyers want better fuel economy without changing how they drive or worrying about charging every night.

Toyota’s Best Sellers Are Still the Family Favorites

Toyota’s strongest performers weren’t surprises.

Models including the:

  • RAV4
  • Camry
  • Tacoma
  • Grand Highlander
  • Sienna

All helped push sales higher during the quarter. These are exactly the kinds of vehicles that appeal to growing families, commuters, and road-trippers alike.

The continued success of the Grand Highlander is especially noteworthy as Toyota expands its larger family SUV offerings.

Choice Continues to Be Toyota’s Biggest Advantage

While many manufacturers are focusing heavily on one type of powertrain, Toyota now offers one of the industry’s broadest electrified lineups.

That means shoppers can choose:

  • Traditional gas engines
  • Hybrid models
  • Plug-in hybrids
  • Battery EVs

without leaving the Toyota showroom.

For family buyers who aren’t ready to make the leap to a fully electric vehicle, that’s proving to be a winning formula.

Toyota’s sales report reinforces something we’ve believed for a while.

Families don’t necessarily want the newest technology.

They want the technology that best fits their lifestyle.

Right now, that’s increasingly Toyota hybrids.

Toyota recognized that years ago, and the latest sales numbers suggest the rest of the market is catching up.
