While Supplies Last: We Test the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Off-Road

At this year’s Texas Auto Writer’s Association’s Texas Truck Rodeo, we got to spend time with a unicorn, of sorts. Say hello to the 2022 Ram 1500 Limited 10th Anniversary Crew Cab 4×4 with the beloved 3.0L EcoDiesel.
NEED TO KNOW
- This is effectively a swan-song test of the EcoDiesel — Ram is ending production in January 2023.
- The 3.0L Gen3 EcoDiesel makes 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, enabling up to 12,560 lbs of tow capacity.
- Real-world range can reportedly exceed 1,000 miles per tank, making it a standout commuter and road-trip truck.
- The 10th Anniversary Limited edition celebrates a decade of Ram’s premium Limited trim that inspired competitors’ luxury packages.
- Tested at the Texas Auto Writer’s Association’s Texas Truck Rodeo off-road course.
This 10th-anniversary edition commemorates a decade of the premium “Limited” trim’s existence. Setting the bar high for what a luxurious pickup truck could be, the Limited made other brands take notice. We now have luxury trims of all other major competitors: Capstone for Tundra, High Country for Silverado, and both Limited and Platinum for F-150. (The Sierra Denali predates the Ram 1500 Limited.) On our 2022 model year tester, Ram has real wood, metal, and leather everywhere (even leather-wrapped grab handles for rear seat occupants!) Reclining rear seats with heat and ventilated outboard positions set the Ram 1500 Limited apart.
What makes this particular tester a unicorn is what is found under the hood: Ram’s 3.0L turbocharged Gen3 EcoDiesel engine. Making 260 horsepower and an impressive 480 lb-ft of torque, this powertrain can be capable of towing up to 12,560 lbs. (in a half-ton pickup!) This particular engine has also made headlines because owners are claiming over 1,000 miles of range on a single tank! (see link below)
Unfortunately, as great as those power, towing, and range numbers sound, Ram is discontinuing the EcoDiesel engine midway through the 2023 model year. With new powertrains like the 3.0L twin-turbo straight-six dubbed the “Hurricane” along with the upcoming Ram EV, the brand claims the EcoDiesel has run its course. If you want one of these impressive diesel engines in your Ram 1500, you will need to get your order in before the end of November 2022 as the order banks will officially close and production will cease in January of 2023.
