2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 First Look: Massaging Seats, 481 HP, and 35s

The pressure on Chevrolet could not be much higher as it prepares to launch the next-generation 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2. Ram has brought the HEMI back. Ford keeps expanding its off-road truck lineup. Meanwhile, buyers expect a modern interior, useful technology, and real capability from a truck that can push well beyond $80,000 with options.
After spending time with the new 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 at the State Fair of Texas, I think Chevy understands the assignment. The new ZR2 combines a 2-inch factory lift and 35-inch mud-terrain tires with front and rear electronic lockers. It also gets Multimatic DSSV dampers and an available 481-horsepower 6.6-liter V8. More importantly, the completely redesigned cabin finally feels appropriate for Chevrolet’s off-road flagship.
I have not driven it yet, so this is not a full review. Still, the hardware, packaging, and attention to detail give us plenty to discuss.
The 6.6-Liter V8 Gives the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Its Own Personality

The standard engine in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 is the familiar 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel inline-six. It produces 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. However, buyers who want something louder and more powerful can step up to Chevrolet’s new 6.6-liter Small Block V8.
The 6.6 produces 481 horsepower and 501 lb-ft of torque. That makes it the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 currently offered in a light-duty pickup. It uses direct and port fuel injection and pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet positions it as the performance engine for trucks like the ZR2. It is also the no-compromise luxury option for the High Country.
During my walkaround, Chevrolet representative Scott Garver described the 6.6 as the engine for off-road enthusiasts. He also called it the choice for buyers who want the strongest V8 experience. That makes sense here. The ZR2 is not the Silverado’s maximum-towing configuration. Instead, it is the truck meant to feel special when the pavement ends.
Ironically, the smaller 5.7-liter V8 is Chevrolet’s towing champion. It makes 402 horsepower and 428 lb-ft and can tow as much as 13,700 pounds in a properly equipped Silverado. The 6.6 tops out at 9,700 pounds across the broader Silverado lineup. That difference comes down to the truck configuration and chassis paired with each engine. It is not a lack of muscle from the bigger V8.
We have a complete breakdown of GM’s sixth-generation Small Block V8 engines. That includes the unusual decision to replace the traditional oil dipstick with an electronic oil-level sensor.
Chevrolet Finally Put 35-Inch Tires on the 2027 Silverado ZR2

Chevrolet needed to get the ZR2’s wheel-and-tire package right, and the 2027 truck takes a meaningful step forward. The outgoing Silverado ZR2 used 33-inch tires. Now, the new truck moves to LT285/75R18 Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, which Chevrolet markets as 35-inch tires.
Those tires sit beneath more squared-off wheel arches and work with a 2-inch factory-installed suspension lift. Chevrolet also fits Multimatic DSSV dampers paired with jounce dampers. In addition, front and rear electronic locking differentials come standard.
Up front, the ZR2 uses a unique bumper with its fog lights moved inward. Large openings also sit ahead of the front tires. As a result, the tire can meet an obstacle before the outer edge of the bumper does. A metal center section and integrated skid protection reinforce the ZR2’s off-road purpose. Meanwhile, the familiar red recovery hooks remain right where truck buyers expect them.
Chevrolet calls this its most off-road-capable ZR2 yet. However, it has not published final ground-clearance, approach-angle, departure-angle, breakover-angle, or suspension-travel measurements. Those numbers matter because the larger tires and revised front bumper should change the truck’s geometry. Until Chevy releases them, treat any precise 2027 off-road-angle figures circulating online cautiously.
The available ZR2 Bison goes further with AEV front and rear bumpers and rocker protection. It also gets 18-inch beadlock-capable wheels and additional skid plates. Those plates protect the front underbody, transfer case, rear differential, and fuel tank.
The New Exterior Is Familiar, but the Details Work

The 2027 Silverado is completely redesigned, although Chevrolet did not throw away the visual identity truck buyers already recognize. The ZR2 gets a dedicated off-road hood with a pronounced power dome. Chevrolet lettering spans the leading edge, while engine badging sits along the side.
Amber marker lights sit in the grille. Revised LED lighting and relocated fog lights also give the front end a more purposeful look. The Silverado badge has moved from the front fender to an unusual spot beneath the side mirror. I am still not convinced that placement works. However, I like the three-dimensional ZR2 badge near the rear of the bed. It looks more substantial than another off-road sticker slapped onto the bedside.
Around back, the exhaust outlets no longer look like HDMI ports. That is a win. The black rear bumper retains Chevrolet’s useful corner steps. The available Multi-Flex tailgate also provides several loading positions, a built-in step, and a load stop. Chevrolet added markings along the tailgate surface and two upper D-rings. According to the truck displayed in Dallas, each D-ring is rated for up to 250 pounds.
The bed includes LED lighting, multiple tie-down locations, an available spray-in liner, and a household-style outlet. Chevrolet also integrated protection for the Multi-Flex tailgate. It can prevent the upper section from dropping onto an installed trailer hitch.
The 2027 Silverado ZR2 Interior Finally Feels Worthy of an $80,000 Truck

The exterior upgrades matter, but the new interior may be the bigger improvement. The 2027 ZR2 starts at $77,200 before destination. Chevrolet’s media specifications list it at $79,995 with the destination freight charge included. At that price, buyers should not have to excuse an aging dashboard or bargain-grade materials.
The truck I inspected in Dallas felt substantially more modern. The ZR2 uses Torch Red accents, red-edged seatbelts, and real forged carbon-fiber trim on the doors and center console. The front seats combine Chevrolet’s EvoTex synthetic upholstery with cloth and textured inserts. ZR2 branding finishes the look. The material does not imitate the grain of traditional leather, but it felt surprisingly soft during my time in the truck.
Sitting in these seats is also a welcome upgrade over older Silverados. The seat itself, not just the seating surfaces, is much softer and more comfortable. This should make long hauls much more bearable.
The front seats in the ZR2 include heating, ventilation, adjustable bolsters, four-way lumbar support, and massage functionality. The rear kept heated outboard seats, USB-C ports, air vents, under-seat storage, and a 60/40 split-folding bench. However, Chevrolet removed the small seatback storage compartments found in the outgoing Silverado. That is one useful feature I would have preferred to keep.
A panoramic sunroof is available on the ZR2, marking the feature’s first appearance in a Silverado. It helps the already-large Crew Cab feel even more open. I also had plenty of room in the rear seat beneath it.
Three Screens, Two Phone Chargers, and CarPlay That Stays

Every 2027 Silverado receives a 16.3-inch center touchscreen and a 12.2-inch driver information display. The ZR2 adds a standard 11.5-inch front-passenger screen. It also includes a head-up display and rear camera mirror. Chevrolet says the top configurations provide more than 60 inches of combined digital display area.
The passenger screen is heavily polarized, so the driver cannot watch entertainment while the truck is moving. It includes HDMI access and Bluetooth headphone support. As a result, the passenger can use a connected device without taking over the center display.
Chevrolet also redesigned the main interface around a configurable home screen. Drivers can keep navigation or Apple CarPlay visible while placing other information in a separate panel. That second panel can show audio, vehicle status, or trailering details. It is a much better solution than forcing the driver to jump constantly between phone projection and native functions. After concern that GM might remove phone projection from future vehicles, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain in the 2027 Silverado.
Physical climate controls remain beneath the screen. The truck also keeps physical controls for its two-speed transfer case, trailer-brake controller, drive modes, and electronic lockers. That balance matters in an off-road truck. After all, digging through a touchscreen for a basic vehicle function is the last thing anyone wants.
Two wireless phone chargers sit side by side at the front of the console. The Multi-Flex center console can slide to open a pass-through storage area. It can also fold into a work surface. Thankfully, Chevrolet retained a column-mounted shifter instead of filling that workspace with an electronic console lever.
A 34-Gallon Tank Fixes a Real Silverado Weakness

Chevrolet lists an approximately 34-gallon fuel tank as part of the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 package. That is an important improvement over the smaller tank in the outgoing truck. It should help owners traveling long distances or heading off-road where fuel stations are limited.
The larger tank is available with the 3.0-liter Duramax, 5.7-liter V8, and 6.6-liter V8 across qualifying Silverado configurations. We have already explained why the new Silverado’s 34-gallon tank matters for towing and family road trips.
The ZR2 also includes Super Cruise with trailering capability and three years of the supporting OnStar plan. Super Cruise is not an off-road feature. Still, it could make the long highway drive to the trail much easier. Chevrolet notes that automatic lane changes and Lane Change on Demand are unavailable while towing.
The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Makes a Strong First Impression

The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 looks like a much more complete flagship than the truck it replaces. The 35-inch tires, dual lockers, Multimatic suspension, and available 6.6-liter V8 deliver the hardware enthusiasts wanted. Meanwhile, the redesigned interior addresses one of the Silverado’s most obvious weaknesses. It brings better materials, useful storage, modern displays, and technology that feels thoughtfully integrated instead of simply added for the spec sheet.
It is not cheap. The ZR2’s $77,200 starting MSRP is $5,400 higher than the 2026 model before destination. Our complete 2027 Silverado pricing comparison explains the increase. Options will push it beyond $80,000 quickly.
There are also important questions left to answer. Chevrolet still owes us complete off-road dimensions and official EPA fuel-economy ratings. More importantly, I need to drive it. A static walkaround cannot tell us how the 6.6-liter V8 responds on the road. It also cannot reveal how the larger tires affect steering and ride quality. Finally, we need to know whether the updated ZR2 feels composed when the trail gets rough.
Still, the first impression is encouraging. Chevrolet invested heavily in V8 power while other automakers were moving away from it. It finally gave the ZR2 the larger tires it needed and built a cabin worthy of the price. Now I want to put it to work.
