One Ram TRX or Two Silverado Trail Boss Trucks?

There are normal truck comparisons, and then there is this. On paper, the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT and the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado Custom Trail Boss are both off-road-focused full-size pickups. They both have V8 power. They both sit tall. They both wear Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires. They both have red tow hooks, four-wheel-drive hardware, and enough attitude to make the school drop-off line a little more interesting.
But that is about where the similarities end.
The Ram is a 777-horsepower, six-figure super truck with tons of wheel travel, a supercharged HEMI V8, and enough luxury to embarrass plenty of premium SUVs. The Chevy is a simpler, more affordable, six-passenger Trail Boss with a naturally aspirated 5.3-liter V8 and a sticker price that comes in well below the Ram.
So the question becomes simple: If you had roughly $107,000 to spend, would you buy one 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT, or would you buy nearly two 2026 Chevrolet Silverado Custom Trail Boss pickups?
The Ram TRX SRT Is Back With 777 Horsepower

The biggest news here is under the hood.
For 2027, the Ram 1500 TRX SRT brings back the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V8, now rated at 777 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque. That is more power than the Ford F-150 Raptor R, which means Ram is not tiptoeing back into the horsepower wars. It is kicking the door open with a blower whine.
Power runs through a TorqueFlite 8HP95 8-speed automatic transmission and a BorgWarner 48-13 full-time active transfer case. There is no 2WD burnout mode here. The TRX is built to send power to all four wheels, all the time, with 4WD Auto, 4WD High Locked and 4WD Low Locked settings.
There is also launch control, because apparently 777 horsepower in a full-size pickup was not already dramatic enough.
The Silverado Trail Boss Plays a Different Game

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado Custom Trail Boss is not trying to be a super truck. That is not the point.
This truck uses the optional 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It also gets an Autotrac 2-speed transfer case, an automatic mechanical locking rear differential and the Z71 suspension package with a 2-inch factory lift.
It is still a properly capable truck, just without the six-figure theater of the TRX.
The Custom Trail Boss also keeps things simple inside. You get cloth seats, a front bench, seating for six, analog gauges, a 7-inch Chevrolet Infotainment 3 touchscreen and the kind of cabin that feels more like a truck than a rolling luxury lounge.
And honestly, there is still a lot to like about that.
Off-Road Hardware: Super Truck vs Simple Trail Truck

The TRX is the more extreme machine by a wide margin.
It gets an independent front suspension with forged aluminum upper and lower control arms, 13 inches of front wheel travel, a five-link coil rear suspension, a Dana 60 rear axle, full-floating axle shafts and 14 inches of rear wheel travel. The second-generation Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive performance shocks are a major part of the TRX formula, helping this massive truck handle speed, impacts and off-road abuse in a way most pickups simply cannot.
Ground clearance comes in at 11.8 inches, and the massive LT325/65R18D Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrain tires give the TRX the stance to match its specs.
The Silverado Custom Trail Boss takes a more traditional approach. It gets the Z71 Off-Road Package, a 2-inch factory lift, Rancho monotube shocks, skid plates, hill descent control, a heavy-duty air filter and front red recovery hooks. Its 275/65R18C Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud-terrain tires are a great fit for the personality of the truck.
The Chevy is not trying to fly across the desert like the TRX. It is trying to give families V8 power, real truck utility and trail-ready hardware without pushing the price into luxury SUV territory.
Interior: Six-Figure Luxury or Old-School Truck Simplicity?

Inside, the Ram TRX SRT feels every bit like a premium performance truck.
It has leather-trimmed bucket seats, a leather flat-bottom steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats with massage, heated and ventilated second-row seats, a 12-inch digital driver display, a 14.5-inch Uconnect 5 navigation touchscreen and a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with a 10-inch subwoofer.
There is a lot of luxury here, and the back seat is part of the story. The TRX offers a massive crew cab, Ram’s clever in-floor storage bins, reclining rear seats, rear vents and a 60/40 split-folding rear bench. For a family, it is wildly spacious.
The Silverado Custom Trail Boss is much more basic, but basic does not mean useless.
The Chevy brings a 40/20/40 split front bench seat with hidden underseat storage, seating for six, simple controls, two glove boxes, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat and a huge back seat. It may not feel modern or luxurious, but it does the family truck job well.
For parents, that matters. Sometimes the best family feature is not a giant screen. Sometimes it is easy-clean cloth, a wide rear seat, simple controls and room for everybody.
The Family Question: Which One Actually Makes Sense?

The Ram TRX SRT is the one your enthusiast side wants. It has 777 horsepower, outrageous presence, premium materials, massive capability, and the kind of sound that makes you look for excuses to drive it.
The Silverado Custom Trail Boss is the one your practical side understands. It has a V8, a lift, off-road equipment, six-passenger seating, a useful bed, a much lower price and better fuel economy.
The TRX is rated at 10 mpg city, 14 mpg highway and 12 mpg combined. It also needs premium fuel and has a 33-gallon tank, which means filling it up will not be a cheap hobby.
The Silverado Trail Boss with the 5.3-liter V8 is rated at 15 mpg city, 18 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined, and it runs on regular unleaded fuel with a 24-gallon tank.
Neither truck is what anyone would call fuel-efficient, but one is clearly less painful to live with.
So, Which Truck Would We Pick?

The 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT is absurd, unnecessary and expensive.
It is also awesome.
There is something wonderfully ridiculous about a 777-horsepower family truck with heated and ventilated rear seats, massage front seats, desert-running suspension and enough width to need marker lights. It is the kind of truck that makes no practical sense and still makes you want it anyway.
The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado Custom Trail Boss is the more reasonable choice. It gives you V8 power, useful off-road gear, seating for six and a price tag that leaves a lot more room in the family budget.
So the real answer depends on what kind of truck buyer you are.
If you want the most outrageous factory full-size pickup you can buy, the TRX is the one. If you want a V8 off-road truck that still makes sense for family life, the Silverado Custom Trail Boss is the smarter play.
But if we are being honest, smart is not always what wins the driveway debate.
