Ford’s Fathom EV Brings The Fight To Slate, Starts At $29,945
The Ford Fathom is arriving in a fast-changing market. The EV pickup wars are entering uncharted territory as a growing number of companies prepare to enter the budget-friendly side of the market. EV upstart Slate fired the first shot in this war when the firm unveiled its bargain-friendly Slate pickup, which blended a low price tag with an approach that brought buyers back to a simpler time when crank windows and minimalism defined an automobile.
Ford knew it couldn’t allow an upstart to enter a key segment of the pickup market, and after admitting testing had already begun, revealed the new truck would not only be called the Fathom, but that it would also start at $29,945, which would allow it to be one of the least expensive pickups on the market when it eventually goes on sale.
Ford’s Fathom Is A Bold Swing In A New Direction
Before we dive into the truck, we should talk about the Fathom name itself. Ford could’ve taken the easy way out. It could have revived a classic nameplate like the Ranchero for its new EV. Instead, the company said it considered some of those names. Ultimately, it chose a completely new path and landed on the Fathom nameplate.
The word Fathom usually describes the depth of a body of water. Ford, however, says the name instead comes “from a deep understanding of the person who would drive it.” Marketing lingo aside, the Fathom marks a new direction for Ford. It will be the brand’s first EV to move away from the upper-income bracket. In doing so, it aims to duplicate what the ICE-powered Maverick did when it rocketed to sales success a few years ago.
Fathom Is Also Debuting A New Production Process
The Fathom’s price tag will hog the bulk of the spotlight. Even so, the truck also debuts a new production process. Ford builds its other trucks on a traditional assembly line. The Fathom instead rides on Ford’s Universal EV platform. The factory will use a novel “assembly tree” process to put it together. That process splits the assembly line into three sections. Workers then join the front and rear sections to the center interior and battery section at the end.
Ford says this process uses 20% fewer components. It also cuts the number of workstations by 40% versus a typical production line. That leaner setup reduces costs. The savings then helped Ford keep the final price low for consumers.
How Does The Fathom Measure Up?
When the Fathom eventually arrives in showrooms, it will face a key rival. That rival is Slate Auto and its EV pickup. The Slate truck carries a lower starting price of $24,950. It hits that number with a bare-bones presentation. The truck ships with manually operated crank windows, colored wraps in place of paint, and no factory audio system.
Instead, the Slate doubles down on configurability. The firm offers a large pool of accessories and options. Buyers can then customize the truck to their tastes. That includes paying extra for power windows and other comfort features we often take for granted. Ford didn’t release detailed information on the Fathom’s EV powertrain. Still, look for it to beat the Slate on range. Slate estimates 205 miles from its 63-kWh battery pack, though the EPA hasn’t yet confirmed that figure.
Ford also promised the Fathom will offer plenty of standard equipment. That list includes a digital key, an infotainment system, and BlueCruise with Apple Maps integration. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto round it out. That tech alone would give the Fathom an edge over the Slate.
When Will It Debut?
A key element missing from Ford’s announcement was a firm launch date. The company said the Fathom would appear in 2027 but offered no further details. That timeline could still change. Much of it depends on how long Ford needs to prep the plant for the Fathom’s production methods. A project on that scale won’t happen overnight. It takes plenty of time to ready an assembly plant with new tooling for a new production process.
If everything falls into place, the Fathom might appear late in the year. Production would then kick into gear during 2027. Plenty of questions about the Fathom remain. Even so, look for this truck to be a proverbial all-in bet for Ford. The rewards could be huge if it meets its sales targets.
