Next-Generation Honda CR-V Reportedly Delayed as Strong Sales Continue

The Honda CR-V has been a cornerstone of Honda’s lineup for decades, and the current generation is no exception. Thanks to its blend of technology, practicality, and fuel economy, the compact SUV remains one of the best-selling vehicles in America. It even outsold its chief rival, the Toyota RAV4, in the first half of 2026.
An all-new, next-generation Honda CR-V is already in development. However, a new report suggests Honda may push back its arrival so it can keep selling the current model while demand stays hot.
Strong Sales Buy the Current CR-V More Time

According to Automotive News, an unnamed source says production of the next-generation CR-V will slip by three months. That would push the start of production to April 2027.
The report did not say whether the delay affects one plant or both. Honda builds the CR-V in Greensburg, Indiana, and in Alliston, Ontario. An earlier report had the Canadian plant starting production in February, with Indiana following a few months later.
So why wait? The likely answer is demand. Dealer inventory of the current CR-V is very low, and every one Honda builds adds to a steady stream of profit. Rushing the new model into showrooms could interrupt that flow of cash.
Honda Responds to the Delay Report

As word of the delay spread, CarBuzz asked Honda for comment. A Honda spokesperson responded with this statement:
“Honda has not announced any information on future CR-V model changes, so we cannot comment on speculation about launch timing. We are pleased to continue production of the current 2027 CR-V to meet strong customer demand and help replenish dealer inventories. Dealer inventory currently stands at approximately a 17-day supply, well below our ideal level.”
Honda’s statement neither confirms nor denies the report. Still, its admission that inventory sits well below where it wants it is telling. Building more of the current CR-V would help close that gap, and it would give the outgoing model more time in showrooms.
What We Know About the Next-Generation Honda CR-V

Honda has kept most details under wraps, but the new CR-V will bring big changes. It will ride on an all-new platform that Honda says is lighter and more refined than before. That same flexible architecture will also underpin the next Civic and Accord.
Expect a hybrid powertrain to return as well. In fact, Honda will likely use the new CR-V to show off the latest version of its hybrid system.
The timing fits Honda’s broader strategy. The company has scaled back its EV plans and is sharpening its focus on hybrids as more buyers move away from EVs. That push could even bring hybrid versions of the ADX and HR-V.
Honda Has More New Models on the Way

The CR-V is only one piece of the puzzle. Honda plans to launch several new vehicles over the next two years, led by a new generation of hybrids. The company recently revealed a pair of hybrid prototypes, one for Honda and one for Acura, that hint at the design and technology coming to both brands. Acura’s upcoming large SUV could also adopt hybrid power.
Meanwhile, Honda’s hybrid momentum is already showing up in the numbers. The automaker set sales records in September on the strength of the CR-V and its hybrid lineup. It also posted record third-quarter hybrid sales, even as Toyota held on to the top spot.
This wave of new products is aimed squarely at Toyota in the sales race. If the report is accurate, a short delay for the next-generation Honda CR-V may simply let Honda make the most of a winner. We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.
